Paper Abstract:
Examines play's structure & how action on physical & mental planes reflects changes in character of Paula.

Paper Introduction:
This study will examine the structure of Arthur Wing Pinero's play, The Second Mrs. Tanqueray, focusing on the ways the work divides what is going on in the physical world or the body and what is going on in the soul or the mind. In those structural terms, the study will examine the character of Paula as it changes and develops through the play. Pinero establishes the fact that Paula's character is profoundly affected by her physical environment, by what other people think about her in that environment, and, certainly, by the physical needs of her body. The playwright shows through this relationship of character to environment that Paula is a woman headed for disaster, because she is almost entirely shaped by what other people think of her and because she has little sense of her self separate from others. Pinero chooses this approach

will examine the what is going on in the soulor the mind In character is profoundlyaffected by her physical environment by what other because she is almost entirely shapedby what people do indeed live life on by thecontrast between the reasonable and idealistic Aubrey and think compassionately fairlyeven of the sense ofhonor as if marrying Aubrey would the play In otherwords society is judging Paula's worth as is deemed unacceptable by society and than for those who sin and Aubrey takes Paula into his of society Of course no such mental level Society as well does not change in by the opening scene rather than couplemoves to a far more isolated environment each stage of the play thispowerfully conflicting relationship between the throughout the play essentially maintains some reasonablemeasure of equilibrium that peopleat heart that is on a non-physical level are for Paula and his daughter the worsethe situation because it is the end of theplay the helped to kill her If I'd only then Ellean refers to the mercy she of their non-physical worth morality mentality spirituality based on their sin should cast the first stone Yet the story worthby what he or she such non-judging suchcompassion and mercy Certainly almost every act undertaken relationship with another humanbeing Whatever his personal are obviously in need of such compassion Nevertheless the more Paula as a representation ofthat ambiguous world Of clearly tragic message which goes beyondPaula's suicide Aubrey in order to alter themental if none of these goals and infact firmly in the real physical world of harsh show that goodness does not always result inhappiness us that the playwrighthas not written off the moral or fallen far off the spiritual and forgiveness Alas for Ellean and Paula that option of delineatingPinero's message about the meaning of the doomed to spin out of Second Mrs Tanqueray Studio City CA on the ways the work divides what isgoing on develops through the play Pinero Theplaywright shows through this relationship of character to environment others Pinero chooses this approach onthat plane This physical non-physical is evident in his conversation with Drummle early in suggestion is further thatAubrey has no motivation is being judged by society for her past isanother body Society assumes that Paula's past of compassion he might bespeaking in a religious takes place on the physical to redeem her not only by Paula's marriage to Aubrey her pastactivities However the change which does take Aubrey Thisrejection leads to a become even more intense and troublesome Therefore when they leave that urban environment for a moreisolated because he is an idealistin denial about contrary that the harder he works daughter tells him that Paula haskilled herself from the world in guilt andself-pity a mental mentionscompassion as his primary motivation in helping Paula not judging others andthis judgment is rooted Thesituation of course brings to mind the is obvious in the play just as themessage seems scenario include the fact that Aubreyis trying is certainly meant to be seen as agood man into practice the admonition to notjudge to live with rearrangement of the physical world also plays a major role in the tragedy there is no hope of doing good in theworld no Paula Paula's behavior and Paula's view of herself atthe idealist meant by Pinero to show that aperson of reader takes the view that merciful toward Paula when Paula told her of her pastrelationship need the compassion and mercy of more than one person suicide could have been prevented had Ellean joined with own and others' failings The character ultimate message of the with respect to Aubrey is try to do good and yet to bringabout destruction despite structure of Arthur Wing Pinero's those structural terms the study will examine people think about herin that environment and certainly other people think of her and because she the physicalplane and are in the flighty andunpredictable Paula Aubrey believes that he woman Pinero Clearly the suggestion here is that Aubrey indeed accomplish such a restoration forher a person her character hermind even her soul on that suchactivity is a sign of a corrupt should be condemned or at leastostracized is seen as a home andhis life into the physical realm he has event follows no such redemption its thinking with respect toPaula She is taking a redeemed Paula intoits bosom society In this environment thedifferences between the two physical and the non-physical Where the couple is in between the physical and non-physical parts of hischaracter or good and that given adecent opportunity to express and becomes Perhaps Aubrey has come to this realization about the reader can only speculate More likely than a spiritual been merciful This reader does wished she had shownPaula The play to this behavior and especially on behavior which is not that simple Certainly the split does in the physical i e by a humanbeing has some personal agenda included some selfish desires conscious or unconscious Aubreyseems to Aubrey tries to help the worse course Paula's obsession with confessing all herpast activities even when has tried to do good but it not the physical world in other words Aubrey's act of made a bad situation worse and finally tragic Is reality if they are to However the ending with Ellean
