Paper Abstract:
Traditional vs. modern lifestyles, generational conflict, economics, women's roles, aging population, work ethic, housing, leisure.

Paper Introduction:
Conformity within a society means that there are certain norms, laws, and traditions that people are expected to follow or they will face some form of social or physical castigation. Independence within a society means a deviation from accepted norms or modes of behavior. Since most contemporary societies are comprised of a diverse ethnic and racial population, there is usually room for some independent thought or action--if only because of the plurality of customs practiced. Of course, some customs, such as a society's laws, necessarily mandate conformity. In a society such as Japan's, which does not have a diverse population--being mainly comprised of Japanese--conformity to a particular set of customs, norms, and traditions have been more marked, and deviation from these modes of behavior has begun to surface only in the last several decades. This

Overview. Demographics, govt., economy, foreign relations (U.S., China, Russia, Korea), security, problems.

Paper Introduction:
Japan is an island country, which according to tradition, was founded in 660 BC by Emperor Jimmu. It has a comparative area that is slightly smaller than California. Its total land area is 374,744 kilometers, which includes Bonin Islands, Ryukyu Islands, and Volcano Islands. Its coastline area encompasses 29,751 kilometers. Currently, several of its islands are claimed by other nations. These include Etorofu, Kunashiri, and Shikotan Islands, and the Habomai island group occupied by the Soviet Union in 1945, now administered by Russia, and claimed by Japan; Liancourt Rocks disputed with South Korea; and Senkaku Islands claimed by China and Taiwan. Japan's climate varies from tropical in the south to cool temperate in the north. Its terrain is mostly rugged and mountainous. Thirteen percent of its land is arable, with one

Paper Abstract:
Defines & describes language system which reflects cultural values, social relationships, attitudes & traditions.

Paper Introduction:
Every language has its own way of solving certain social issues that arise whenever people come together in a social setting, and the people of Japan and Korea can serve as examples of how different languages address these concerns. The use of honorifics is a social convention that can have a number of purposes ranging from identifying family relationships and marital status to showing that the speaker is adhering to the conventions of polite society. The system a society develops for handling honorifics says much about the society, the relationships valued by that society, and the expectations placed by that society on individual members. Many of the subtleties differentiating various Asian societies are lost on the Western observer, but there are very real linguistic and social distinctions to be noted between the languages of Japan and Korea

Paper Introduction:
INSTRUCTOR CONTROL AND STUDENT PARTICIPATION IN JAPANESE SCHOOLS This short paper attempts to identify what might constitute a reasonable balance between instructor control and student participation in the learning events. It does not purport to answer the question whether there should be such balance. It merely and briefly examines the concepts of authority, accountability, autocratic control and democratic participation to the extent that they are applied in today's Japanese elementary, secondary, and tertiary schools, both public and private. The author posits that both control and participation are operational outcomes of accountability and of the antipodal autocratic/democratic dyad. In turn, these behaviors derive from the isolationist and cultural-shock social phenomena which have

Overview of govt. technology policy, products, marketing, industrial planning, entrepreneurism, industry conditions.

Paper Introduction:
The issue of television coverage of criminal and civil trials, in the wake of Estes v. Texas (381 U.S. 532, 1965) and Chandler v. Florida (449 U.S. 560, 1981) continues to polarize legal scholars and professionals. In response to grossly overzealous media coverage of the 1935 Lindbergh kidnapping trial of Bruno Hauptmann (State v. Hauptmann, 115 N.L.J. 412, 1935), the American Bar Association adopted "Canon 35" as part of its Canons of Judicial Ethics in 1937 which, although advisory only, prohibited either (radio) broadcasting or photography within the courtroom. Specifically, Canon 35 stated: Proceedings in court should be conducted with fitting dignity and decorum. The taking of photographs in the courtroom, during sessions of the court or recesses between sessions, and the broadcasting of court proceedings are

Paper Abstract:
History, spiritual & symbolic importance, swordmaking, military, decline.

Paper Introduction:
Throughout history, the sword has served as an important religious and national symbol to the Japanese people (Obata, 1986, p. 14). To the Japanese, the sword is not merely a military weapon; rather, it is a representation of such spiritual values as strength, honor and bravery. In traditional Japanese society, the sword also stood as a sign of social status, because only people from the upper classes were permitted to wear swords (Perrin, 1979, p. 50). The sword was especially associated with the samurai, a warrior class which received a great deal of honor and respect during the Japanese feudal period. In the sixteenth century, the process of Japanese swordmaking began to undergo a period of decline which has yet to be reversed. Nevertheless, the sword has continued to have great spiritual significance in Japan up to the present day.

Paper Abstract:
Role of militarization in modernization & development of Japan in 19th Cent.

Paper Introduction:
The Meiji period was the beginning of the development of economic life in Japan at a rapid pace. The period was also a time of military buildup, and this buildup has been seen as the major contribution to building the technological foundation for the successful industrialization to follow. This has been suggested by Kozo Yamamura, who holds that the strong army policy was the principle motivation for creating and expanding the arsenals and other publicly financed elements of war that would act as effective centers for the absorption and dissemination of Western technologies and skills and that this same policy provided the demand needed to assure the survival and growth of struggling private firms in important industrial fields. The rate of growth for Japan since the Meiji period has been analyzed and "provides a record of success which is widely envied by the

Paper Introduction:
Upper Civil Service in Japan This paper will discuss various aspects of the Japanese upper, or higher, civil service, including recruitment and organization, and will discuss the power and influence of the civil service in the government. The recruitment of civil servants is probably more important in Japan than in any other country because of certain factors which are unique to Japan. First of all, it has become customary in Japan for civil servants to enjoy lifetime employment. Second, decentralized recruiting and an extremely low degree of lateral mobility have created a cautious and competitive recruitment system. Third, the multiple track recruiting system has raised the stakes of initial recruitment, since future leaders are identified and selected during the process. Finally,

Paper Abstract:
Ways in which Japanese & Amer. cultures determined rules & perceptions of combat at battles of Peleliu & Okinawa.

Paper Introduction:
This study will evaluate E.B. Sledge's With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa, in terms of the collision of the American and Japanese cultures and the ways in which each determined the rules and perceptions of combat held by the members of each culture in the battles of Peleliu and Okinawa. The study will also consider the writer's personal view if he were President Harry S. Truman and had to consider using the atomic bomb to end the war against Japan, in light of the events in those two horrendous battles. It is unfair to assess the two cultures' views of war, the "rules" of war, without first emphasizing the fact that this book was written by an American who knew little of Japanese culture before, during, or after the battles in which he took part. This is not to say that Sledge is a racist, or lacks compassion for or

Japan's Military Course During and After the Persian Gulf War In the latter half of 1990 and the early part of 1991, during the time in which the Persian Gulf Crisis began and evolved into the Persian Gulf War, something unprecedented happened. The whole world united--democratic and Communist nations alike--to fight one man, one country: Iraq and Saddam Hussein. Western and Eastern nations alike believed that Hussein was a menace to the world, that he threatened world peace, that he brutally invaded Kuwait and might not stop there, that he was attempting to control one of the world's greatest oil supplies. The general consensus was that Hussein was a menace and must be stopped. But how should he be stopped, and at what cost to countries, governments, individual lives? Here is where

Types of banks, regulations, comparisons with U.S. banking.

Paper Introduction:
Much attention has recently been focused on the Japanese economy, including imports, exports and business strategy. Conglomerates such as Sony and Matsushita and automobile manufacturers such as Honda and Toyota have been the subject of "Buy American" campaigns as American manufacturers struggle to maintain market share in an increasingly global marketplace. One area which has not received the same amount of attention as commercial business is the banking industry within Japan, an industry which is key to the financial and economic success of the Japanese economy as a whole. This research focuses on the Japanese banking system, including the different types of banks which exist, the regulatory environment in which they operate, and how Japanese banking differs from banking in the United States.

Paper Abstract:
Post-war depictions of Japanese culture & society as part of Amer. effort to re-shape that society to prevent another war.

Paper Introduction:
This paper will discuss the depiction and treatment of Japanese culture and society in the American popular media during the year 1948. At that time, the United States had recently attained victory over the Japanese in World War Two. In various ways, the forces of the American occupation were trying to reshape Japanese society in order to prevent another war from breaking out in the future. During the Second World War, the Japanese people had proven themselves to be relentless in obeying the dictates of their Emperor. Most Americans believed that the Japanese invasion would have not been stopped had it not been for the devastating impact of the atomic bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August of 1945. Thus, in the years following the war, many Americans were concerned about the possibility of the Japanese regaining their military power. In addition, there was

Paper Abstract:
Analyzes submissive middle class in Japanese society.

Paper Introduction:
This study will consider a number of elements of the "submissive" middle class in Japanese society as described and analyzed in Karel van Wolferen's The Enigma of Japanese Power. The basis of much of the power and order of Japan in the world in the late years of the 20th century is what van Wolferen calls the "submissive" nature of that society. As the author notes, "The post-war aims of the Japanese System have been entrusted mainly to the economic organizations. The System is preoccupied with industrial and commercial pursuits . . . " (p. 159). And industrial and commercial pursuits are successful because of submissive and obedient workers, who are modeled on the "salaryman" model. As the author writes, " . . . The term 'salaryman' connotes much more than 'office clerk' or 'white-collar worker'; it stands

Paper Abstract:
Examines decisions to drop nuclear bombs on two Japanese cities during World War II.

Paper Introduction:
One of the most significant events of the modern world has been the use of nuclear weapons in warfare. Since the dropping of two small atomic devices on Japan in August, 1945, global society, international relations, warfare, science, and philosophy have been impacted. Additionally, human culture has never been quite the same. Although there are numerous perspectives from which one could address the issues surrounding the Allied bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, this paper will concentrate on the decisionmaking process and alternatives available prior to August 1945. It will begin with an overview of the background to the bombing and the Manhattan Project itself. Alternatives will then be examined, including invasion, inducement, and the shock value of atomic weapons. The paper will then analyze the policy constraints of the decision based on

Paper Abstract:
Cultural basis for Japan's economic superiority despite small size & dearth of resources. Socio-historical & philosophical foundations for successful management emphasizing common goals, manager-worker cooperation.

Paper Introduction:
As a modern, industrial country, Japan has been able to significantly and steadily improve its productivity and enhance the quality of its manufacturing processes to the point where it is providing world leadership in the art and science of management, especially production management. Although the West has expressed considerable interest in Japanese management techniques over the last few decades, there has been only limited interest in adopting particular aspects of Japanese management into the American corporate environment. This is due, in part, to the overriding belief that Japanese management is inexorably tied to Japanese culture, and hence is not transferable. In fact, although there are numerous examples of culture and management being intertwined, particular variables and techniques from Japanese management "are transferable to the West, although

Paper Abstract:
Examines whether it was an intelligent decision. Deals with political & military aspects of this question.

Paper Introduction:
No single military event in history had long-term consequences so profound as the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. It was not simply that a city full of people died horribly--that had happened before, and even on a slightly larger scale, in several conventional "fire raids" during World War II. But those previous raids had required on the order of a thousand planes; Hiroshima was destroyed by a single plane dropping a single bomb. By simple extension, a thousand nuclear-armed planes could destroy a thousand cities in a single raid. Civilization could be incinerated in a day. It is usually in the broad, long-term and moral context that the atomic bombing of Hiroshima (and of Nagasaki three days later) has been considered. But it was also a military operation of war--and seemingly a decisive one, since Japan surrendered

Paper Abstract:
Argues that, unlike in other societies, the traditional structure of Japanese society did not change in modernization.

Paper Introduction:
INDUSTRIALIZATION AND URBANIZATION AND ITS EFFECT ON JAPAN'S INDIVIDUALISM In premodern society, the family was the most important factor to its members. The members depended on others within the family for support in everything they did. In other words, "individual" was not a good word to describe a single person, because that person was just one part of the entire peasant household. Claims have been made by sociologists such as Georg Simmel and Peter Berger that single persons develop individuality as a result of the breakup of the peasant household economy brought about by industrialization and urbanization. This paper will attempt to show that this is not the case for Japanese society.
